Maha Nisha Puja & Sacred Mantras

Sacred chants, dhyana, and pushpanjali rules for the dark new moon night.

The Significance of Maha Nisha Puja

Goddess Kali is worshipped at the dead of night, specifically during the **Nishita Kaal** (midnight hours). Unlike traditional daytime worship, this midnight ritual, known as **Maha Nisha Puja**, is highly spiritual and esoteric. The moonless, dark night of Kartik Amavasya represents the absolute state of cosmic dissolution before creation. By worshipping Mother Kali during these hours, devotees seek to destroy their own inner ego, dispel fear of death, and awaken their spiritual consciousness.

The puja is characterized by lighting large ghee and mustard oil lamps, chanting mystical seed sounds (beej mantras), offering red hibiscus flowers (jaba phool), sweets, and running midnight prayers that stretch until dawn.

Sacred Mantras (with English Meaning)

These sacred Sanskrit mantras are chanted during the midnight puja to express devotion, offer flowers, and seek Mother Kali's protection:

1. Kali Dhyana Mantra (Meditation)

"Om karala-vadanam ghoram mukta-keshim chatur-bhujam,
Kalikam dakshinam divyam munda-mala-vibhushitam."

Meaning: I meditate on the divine Dakshina Kalika, who has a terrifying face, flowing loose hair, and four hands. She is decorated with a garland of skulls, representing her victory over time and ego.

2. Kali Pushpanjali Mantra (Flower Offering)

"Om eshha pushpanjalih shrimad-dakshina-kalikayai namah."

Meaning: I offer these fresh flowers to the highly auspicious and revered Goddess Dakshina Kalika. May she accept my humble devotion.

3. Kali Pronam Mantra (Salutation)

"Om sarva-mangala-mangalye shive sarvartha-sadhike,
Sharanye tryambake gauri narayani namo'stu te."

Meaning: Salutations to the auspicious one, who bestows all blessings, fulfills every spiritual desire, and protects those who seek shelter under her divine grace.
