What is Kali Puja & Diwali in Bengal?
In Bengal, Kali Puja (also known as Shyama Puja) is celebrated on the Amavasya (new moon night) of the Hindu month of Kartik. While most parts of India worship Goddess Lakshmi on Diwali, Bengalis dedicate this dark, moonless night to Goddess Kali—the divine mother representing time, change, destruction of evil, and ultimate liberation. Households and community marquees (pandals) light up with clay oil lamps (diyas), wax candles, and colorful electric light arrays, symbolizing the victory of spiritual light over dark ignorance.
