Kojagari Lakshmi Vrat Katha & Panchali

Sacred verses and traditional stories read on the full moon night of Ashwin.

The Holy Vrat Katha (The Mythological Legend)

Once upon a time, there lived a righteous merchant named Valabhadra in a prosperous kingdom. He was deeply religious and charitable, yet through some sudden stroke of misfortune and cosmic planetary movements, his entire wealth vanished. His business collapsed, creditors surrounded his home, and poverty gripped his large family. Despondent and broken-hearted, Valabhadra consulted a wise sage living on the banks of the sacred Ganges.

The sage comforted him and said, "My dear son, do not lose faith. The wheel of fortune revolves constantly. Your poverty is due to the descent of Alakshmi (the sister of Lakshmi representing misfortune). To drive Her away and welcome Mother Lakshmi back, you and your family must observe the **Kojagari Lakshmi Vrat** on the Ashwin Purnima (full moon night)."

The sage explained the sacred ritual: "Draw traditional Alpona feet leading into your house, keep a bowl of uncooked rice filled to the brim in your pantry, light holy lamps in all corners of your home to banish Alakshmi, and spend the entire night singing praises of Goddess Lakshmi. The Mother searches for those who remain awake on this night. When she knocks, she asks *Ko Jagarti* (Who is awake?). Those who are found awake and prayerful are blessed with inexhaustible wealth."

Following the sage's holy instructions, Valabhadra and his family observed the fast with complete devotion, kept the night-long vigil, and read the sacred verses. Impressed by their faith and clean home, Mother Lakshmi entered their residence at midnight and bestowed endless gold coins and prosperity upon them. From that day on, the Kojagari Vrat became a highly observed tradition across the land.

The Lakshmi Panchali (Sacred Hymns & Moral Directives)

In Bengal, the **Lakshmi Panchali** is a moral and spiritual poem that details how individuals must lead their daily lives to ensure Goddess Lakshmi resides in their homes. It is a set of rules emphasizing cleanliness, humility, charity, and respect.

Verse on Cleanliness & Harmony

"Where peace rules the family and anger is controlled, where guests are welcomed with sweet water and food, there I choose to make my seat. I stay away from homes full of strife, chaos, and continuous greed."

Verse on Respect & Humility

"Those who show disrespect to their elders, parents, and teachers, those who waste grains and mock the poor, will never receive my blessings, even if they pray to me with mountains of gold."

Verse on the Kojagari Vigil

"On this beautiful autumn full moon night, when the earth is bathed in moonlight, light up your home and stay awake in prayer. My presence will fill your rooms, bringing joy and banishing poverty."
