What this site is
My West Bengal is an independently run reference site for Bengali households. It publishes two things: a Bengali calendar and daily panjika computed from astronomical data rather than copied from a printed almanac, and a directory of Central and West Bengal government schemes written in plain language in both Bengali and English.
It exists because both of those things are unusually hard to look up online. Panjika sites tend to publish figures with no statement of how they were derived or for which location. Government scheme information tends to be scattered across departmental portals written in officialese. Neither problem needs new data to solve — it needs the existing data presented honestly.
Where the panjika figures come from
Every tithi, nakshatra, yoga, karana, sunrise, sunset and muhurta window on this site is computed at request time from the Swiss Ephemeris, using the Lahiri ayanamsa and Kolkata as the reference location. Nothing is transcribed from a printed panjika, and no figure is hand-entered.
That is a deliberate choice with a trade-off attached, and the methodology page sets it out in full: which ayanamsa, which coordinates, how month boundaries are decided, and where a computed result can legitimately differ from the almanac your family follows. If you only read one page here before trusting a date, read that one.
How the scheme directory is maintained
Each scheme entry is compiled from the official notification or departmental portal for that scheme, and every entry links out to that official source. Eligibility summaries, document lists and application steps are restatements written for readability — they are not the rule itself.
Scheme rules change without notice, and an entry here can be out of date between the day a rule changes and the day it is noticed. Before you apply, act on the official link, not on the summary. This site is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated on behalf of any government department.
Corrections
Corrections are welcome and are the fastest way this site improves — a wrong tithi boundary or a stale eligibility rule is worth reporting even if you are not certain. Write to mailus.silly@gmail.com, and please include the page address and the date in question so the calculation can be reproduced. See the contact page for what to include.
