Your Next Customer Is Typing “Near Me”: The West Bengal Numbers

We pulled a year of Google search data for West Bengal. Every month, hundreds of thousands of people ask their phones for a shop or a service nearby. Here is who they are looking for, and when.

It is the second week of September in Kolkata. Puja is three weeks away, the new blouse has to fit, and the family tailor in Gariahat has retired.

Somewhere in West Bengal, someone types “tailor near me” into a phone. That month, about eight thousand people did the same.

When people need a shop or a service now, a lot of them do not ask a neighbour first. They ask Google, and they add two words: near me. We looked up how often that happens in West Bengal, trade by trade, using Google Ads search volume data via DataForSEO for October 2025 to September 2026.

Every trade has a season, and it shows

  • AC repair searches more than double in April (5,400) and fall to 1,000 by December. A mechanic who is already on Maps in March catches the first hot week.
  • Electricians and plumbers peak in the early monsoon and in September, just before Puja, when many houses get their repairs done.
  • Tailors are busiest in September (8,100), three or four weeks before Durga Puja.
  • Caterers and banquet halls follow the wedding season, November to February.
  • CA near me jumps to 4,400 in July, the income-tax return month.
  • Tiffin services peak in July and August, probably as colleges reopen and new jobs start after the summer.
  • Cake shops peak in August, September and December, with Christmas and New Year behind the December rise.

If you know your season, you know when to update your hours, post photos and answer reviews: a month before the rush, not during it.

Why this matters more every year

Two numbers explain why “near me” keeps growing. At the end of June 2026 India had about 1,000 million broadband connections, by TRAI’s count, most of them on phones. And in September 2026 UPI handled 24.07 billion payments, about 802 million a day, by NPCI’s figures. The customer who pays by scanning your QR code is the same customer who found you by searching on the phone first.

When someone searches “electrician near me”, Google mostly answers with a map and a short list of businesses close to them, each with a phone number, opening hours, photos and reviews. Google says the order depends on relevance, distance and how well known the business is. A business with no profile is not on that list at all, however good its work and however close it is.

What to do this week

  1. Get on Google Maps

Create or claim your Google Business Profile. If customers do not come to you, list yourself as a service-area business and keep your home address hidden. Step-by-step guide.

  2. Set up WhatsApp Business

A catalog, your hours and an automatic reply, so the 11 pm enquiry gets an answer. How to set it up.

  3. Put the same details everywhere

Same name, same number, same address on every listing. Which free listings matter.

  4. Get a page you can share

List your business free on My West Bengal: you get your own page with your menu or prices, to put on your Google profile, your Instagram bio and your WhatsApp profile. What a listing here does, and doesn’t.

  5. Mark your season

Look up your trade in the table above, and put a reminder in your phone a month before your busiest month.

Myth or fact?

Tap a claim to see the answer.

“People in small towns do not search for shops online.”
Myth

These numbers are for the whole state, not just Kolkata, and only count one English phrase per trade. With about a billion broadband connections in India, the phone is how most people look now.

“You need to pay for ads to show up for “near me”.”
Myth

Ads are one way, and they are labelled. The ordinary map results are free, and depend on relevance, distance and how well known the business is.

Now tell people you exist

List your shop, kitchen or service in the My West Bengal directory. It is free, it gets you a page of your own with your menu or prices, and customers call or WhatsApp you directly.

Send this to someone

About 8,000 people in West Bengal searched “tailor near me” in September 2026, the month before Puja. Is your shop on the map they saw?
