Out of Kolkata by Friday Night: 12 Winter Weekend Trips

Day trips, one-nighters and two-nighters across West Bengal, sorted by how much time you have, with the train or road route for each.

7 min read · Updated

Every December the same argument breaks out in a Kolkata living room. Someone wants the sea. Someone wants Santiniketan for Poush Mela. Someone’s mother wants to go wherever she will not have to climb stairs. The weekend is two days long and Howrah station is already full.

The good news is that West Bengal is unusually generous within a few hours of the city: a French town, a mangrove forest, terracotta temples, a palace with a thousand doors and an empty beach where red crabs outnumber people.

Winter, from November to February, is the season for almost all of these. The heat and humidity drop, the coast is calm, the forests are dry enough to walk in, and the fairs of Poush fall in the middle of it. Below are twelve trips, grouped by how long you need. Times are door-to-door estimates from central Kolkata and depend heavily on traffic and the timetable.

Chandannagar and Bandel

চন্দননগর ও ব্যান্ডেল · Hooghly

Chandannagar was a French settlement from the late seventeenth century until 1950, about 37 km up the Hooghly from Kolkata. Walk the Strand, a tree-lined riverside promenade about 700 m long; visit the Sacred Heart Church, opened in 1884; and see the French-era collection at the Institut de Chandernagor. In November the town hosts West Bengal’s most spectacular Jagaddhatri Puja, famous for its light displays.

A few stations further up the same line, Bandel has the Portuguese-founded Bandel Church and, in Hooghly town next door, the riverside Imambara.

Good to know
The river is best in the late afternoon

Chandraketugarh

চন্দ্রকেতুগড় · North 24 Parganas

A cluster of villages around Berachampa, about 35 km north-east of Kolkata, standing on a port city that was lived in for well over a thousand years from at least the third century BCE. Farmers have been ploughing up terracotta figures here for generations. The full story is in our Chandraketugarh piece.

Getting there
By car; there is little to see without a local guide, so ask at the village museum

Taki

টাকি · North 24 Parganas

An old zamindari town on the Ichamati, which here forms the border with Bangladesh: the far bank is another country. Come for a slow day on the ghats and a boat ride. Taki is best known for Bijoya Dashami, when images from both banks are immersed in the same river, but in winter it is calm and quiet.

Getting there
Local train from Sealdah to Taki Road, then a toto

One night away

Santiniketan

শান্তিনিকেতন · Birbhum

Rabindranath Tagore’s university town, about 150 km north of Kolkata, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023. Walk the Visva-Bharati campus and the Uttarayan complex, browse the Saturday haat at Sonajhuri, and ride out to Amar Kutir on the Kopai river.

Poush Mela begins on 7 Poush, which falls around 23 December, and runs for several days on the Purbapalli grounds. In 2024 and 2025 it ran from 23 to 28 December. Rooms fill months ahead, so book early or stay in Bolpur.

Getting there
Trains from Howrah or Sealdah to Bolpur Shantiniketan
Time
About 3 hours by train

Bishnupur

বিষ্ণুপুর · Bankura

The old capital of the Malla kings, with brick temples covered in terracotta panels of the Ramayana, the Mahabharata and the life of Krishna. One full day covers the Rasmancha, Shyam Rai, Jor Bangla, Madan Mohan and the Dalmadal cannon; a second morning gets you to the Baluchari weavers. The Bishnupur Mela of crafts and music is held in the last week of December. Read the story behind the temples in our Bishnupur piece.

Getting there
Trains from Howrah or Santragachi, or by road via Arambagh

Mandarmani and the Digha coast

মন্দারমণি · Purba Medinipur

A 13 km beach where red crabs scatter as you walk, with resorts along the sand. Digha next door is busier and has the most transport; Tajpur and Shankarpur in between are quieter. In winter the sea is calm and the sun is gentle enough for a whole afternoon on the beach.

Getting there
Road, about 3½–4 hours; or train to Contai (Kanthi) or Digha and a car
Careful
Driving on the beach is risky and the tide comes in fast

Bakkhali

বকখালি · South 24 Parganas

A long, flat beach near the mouth of the Hooghly, with casuarina groves, simple hotels and Frasergunj’s fishing harbour next door. Less polished than Digha and much quieter.

Getting there
Local train from Sealdah to Namkhana, then by road

Sundarbans

সুন্দরবন · South 24 Parganas

The largest mangrove forest in the world, shared with Bangladesh; the Indian part was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. Most trips leave by boat from Godkhali, about three hours by road from Kolkata, and spend a night on the water or in a lodge on one of the inhabited islands, with stops at the Sajnekhali watchtower and others. You will see crocodiles, kingfishers and spotted deer; a tiger is a gift, not a promise.

Permits
Needed for the tiger reserve; most tour boats arrange them
Best time
November to February

Jhargram

ঝাড়গ্রাম · Jhargram

A town in the sal forest of the western plateau. The Jhargram Palace, built for the Malla Deb rajas in 1931 in Indo-Saracenic style, sits in 23 acres of grounds. Drive out to the Kanak Durga temple at Chilkigarh by the Dulung river, and on to the hills and forest of Belpahari if you have a second day.

Getting there
Trains from Howrah, about 155 km; or 169 km by road

Two nights or more

Mukutmanipur

মুকুটমণিপুর · Bankura

A reservoir at the meeting of the Kangsabati and Kumari rivers, held back by a 10.8 km earthen dam. Walk along the dam at sunset, take a boat to the islands, and visit Ambikanagar, about 4 km away, once a Jain pilgrimage town.

Getting there
Train to Bankura, then by road via Khatra

Murshidabad

মুর্শিদাবাদ

The capital of the nawabs of Bengal: the Hazarduari palace with its thousand doors (some of them fake), the Katra Masjid, the Nizamat Imambara, and the boat across the Bhagirathi to Khoshbagh, where Siraj-ud-Daulah is buried. Two nights let you see it without rushing. Our Hazarduari piece tells the story.

Getting there
Trains from Sealdah or Kolkata station to Murshidabad

Purulia

পুরুলিয়া

The furthest trip here and the most different: red earth, low hills, waterfalls and Chhau mask-makers on the Chota Nagpur plateau. It is at its clearest in December and January. We have a full Purulia winter guide with routes and a three-day plan.

Getting there
Rupashi Bangla Express from Santragachi, or by road via Bankura

Questions people ask

Where can I go for one day from Kolkata?

Chandannagar and Bandel by local train from Howrah, Chandraketugarh by road, or Taki by local train from Sealdah. All three are back by dinner.

Where should I go for two days from Kolkata?

Santiniketan, Bishnupur, Mandarmani, Bakkhali, the Sundarbans or Jhargram each work as a one-night trip. With two nights, add Mukutmanipur, Murshidabad or Purulia.

What is the best beach near Kolkata?

Mandarmani for a long, quiet beach with resorts; Digha for transport and crowds; Tajpur and Shankarpur for peace; Bakkhali for a cheaper, simpler stay. All are calmest in winter.

When is Poush Mela?

It starts on 7 Poush in the Bengali calendar, which falls around 23 December, and runs for several days. In 2024 and 2025 it ran from 23 to 28 December on the Purbapalli grounds.

Myth or fact?

Tap a claim to see the answer.

“You need a week to see anything worthwhile outside Kolkata.”
Myth

Chandannagar, Chandraketugarh and Taki are day trips, and Santiniketan, Bishnupur or the Sundarbans fit into one night away.

“Chandannagar was a French town until India became independent in 1947.”
Myth

It stayed French after 1947. Residents voted to join India in a 1949 referendum, India took control in 1950, and the town became part of West Bengal in 1954.

“You will see a tiger in the Sundarbans.”
Partly true

Tigers are there, but the forest is dense and most boat trips do not see one. Go for the mangroves, the birds and the crocodiles, and count a tiger as luck.

Quick quiz

  1. 1. Which country lies across the Ichamati from Taki?

  2. 2. When was Santiniketan inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site?

  3. 3. Which two rivers meet at Mukutmanipur?

Send this to someone

Chandannagar stayed French until 1950, three years after independence, and it is an hour from Howrah by local train. Twelve winter weekend trips from Kolkata. 🚆
